Weronika Mazur and Michael Bussmann both landed well at the science CASUS Institute.
Besides the university Zittau-Görlitz, the European town is home to many research institutes. Just in 2019, the German-Polish Casus-Institute was founded. There, researchers will study on complex systems such as global climate, the structure of stars and planets, traffic in metropolises, and metabolism in the human body. Part of the work is made possible thanks to enormously powerful digital tools. Thus, complex developments can be simulated and visualised in far better ways, allowing for more reliable forecasts, such as the analysis of exact data regarding socio-economic effects of climate change on Saxony.
The Senckenberg Society for biodiversity has been seated in Görlitz for a longer time. The society helps to pursue the 200 years-tradition of natural science in Görlitz, as studies on biodiversity, systematic and ecology on animals and plants continues.
Further notable research institutes are Fraunhofer, which runs a learn lab for cyber security together with the university, as well as the interdisciplinary centre for ecological and revitalising urban restructuring. The IZS is a cooperative research institute for ecological spatial development of the TU Dresden.
German Center for Astrophysics: From Lusatia to the Stars
In the fall of 2022, the decision was made to rebuild a major national research center with international appeal in Görlitz. The German Center for Astrophysics (DZA) won this project competition. The idea of the DZA is forward-looking: a center for digitization that brings together the data streams of astronomical observatories around the globe, and a center for the latest technologies that cooperates closely with industry and existing technology centers in Saxony and worldwide.
Welcome to a network with a very special name – and special ambitions! Together with as many committed partners as possible, we would like to meet the challenges posed by demographic and structural change in the region: with initiatives and concepts, with a sense of proportion and passion! Our goal is to increase the attractiveness of research and teaching in a targeted manner and to support and optimize the working and living environment in Lusatia. To achieve this, we rely on excellence, international and regional talent, promotion, transfer and internationalization. Because this is the right place for it. Here – in the heart of Europe – there is enormous potential.
Around 3,000 students at the two locations of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences are living the motto: “studying without borders”. Here in the border triangle between Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, the focus of the programs are practical relevance, academic support and efficiency. This is ensured by more than 110 professors and excellent teaching conditions in an international context, from which foreign students can also benefit. Exciting exchange and research programs with universities in Germany and abroad, the location in a scenic region and a colorful mix of scene, culture and leisure activities make studying & living across national borders attractive.
This project has received funding from tax resources on the basis of the budget adopted by the members of the Parliament of the Free State of Saxony.
