Research creates perspectives: Arash Massoudi (HSZG)

June 2026

Professor Dr. Arash Massoudi is a professor of engineering mathematics at the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. In this interview, the Iranian-born professor talks about his passion for science, his research focus, and what he particularly likes about the Zittau region.

Professor Massoudi, what has your academic journey looked like so far?

After graduating from high school in my hometown of Shiraz, I studied electrical engineering at the University of Tehran. I then pursued a master's degree in technical mathematics at the University of L'Aquila in Italy, and finally earned my doctorate in applied mathematics from the University of Hamburg. After completing my doctorate, I worked for several years as a software developer in the CAD field, specializing in data preparation for automated manufacturing.

What inspired you to pursue a career in science?

My curiosity to gain new insights in my field has always motivated me to pursue an academic career. I am passionate about teaching applied mathematics, and I see the university as the perfect place for interdisciplinary collaboration.

And what brought you to Upper Lusatia and specifically to HSZG?

The region's rich cultural history and diverse landscape appealed to me. I feel honored to be part of this high-performing university and look forward to contributing to teaching and research at HSZG.

What are your main areas of focus here at HSZG, and what fascinates you about it?

My focus is on teaching and research in applied mathematics. I am particularly interested in numerical methods for the optimal control of dynamic systems. Many physical and technical processes can be mathematically modeled as dynamic systems where stability and control are essential. I am working on developing algorithms that optimize the behavior of these systems.

What is Professor Dr. Massoudi like as a private person? Do you have any hobbies or interests that perhaps not everyone knows about?

Yes, indeed – I enjoy playing chess in my free time.

Is there a special place in the region where you can particularly unwind?

Lake Olbersdorf is definitely my favorite place!

Do you have a motto that guides you in life?

Yes, my motto in life is: "Practice makes perfect".
