Research and life in Görlitz
Tim Callow (left in the picture) and Bartosz Brzoza (right in the picture) came to Görlitz from Great Britain and Poland to conduct research at the Center for Advanced Systems Understanding (CASUS). In this interview, the two scientists explain how they came to Görlitz and what they appreciate about working and living in this European city.
Where do you come from and how did you get to Görlitz?
Tim: I'm from London. I studied mathematics and physics at Durham University (Bachelor's and Master's degrees). I also earned my PhD in physics there. At the end of 2020, I moved to Görlitz to work on machine learning in the field of materials design. More specifically, I'm trying to use neural networks to accurately and quickly characterize the state of matter under specific physical conditions. This is important for a wide range of applications in the energy and materials sectors. CASUS is my first postdoctoral position.
Bartosz: I come from Radlin in Poland, a small town in Upper Silesia. I came to CASUS in February 2023, when I was in the last semester of my master's program at the University of Wrocław. I am now a doctoral student here.
Why did you come to Görlitz?
Tim: I came to CASUS for several reasons. Firstly, I had the impression that it was a very dynamic place for scientific research. Secondly, I was drawn to its strong focus on scientific computing and data-intensive science. Although CASUS was still in its early stages, it was already clear to me at that time that there was an interesting mix of colleagues from different research areas and nationalities. As for Görlitz, I wanted to experience life in another country. The timing was perfect for me, as I had just completed my PhD and, due to Brexit, it was my last chance to relocate as an EU citizen. Görlitz seemed like a pretty city with an interesting location right on the German-Polish border. Furthermore, I'm a big fan of outdoor activities, and I immediately realized that there are many opportunities to enjoy nature in and around Görlitz.
Bartosz: Initially, I commuted to Görlitz 2-3 days a week, but I liked the city and the work so much that I decided to stay here full-time. I've been living in Görlitz since July of last year.
What do you like about working and living in Görlitz?
Tim: What I like best about Görlitz is its proximity to nature, as I enjoy running, hiking, and cycling. A particular highlight for me is swimming in the lake after work in the summer – that's not so easy to do in Great Britain! Since it's a small town, life here is quite relaxed, and it's easy to meet people. The festivals that take place in the summer months are also a lot of fun.
Bartosz: What I appreciate most about working here is the opportunity to immerse myself in the scientific community and the friendly and welcoming atmosphere in our office. I greatly value the exchange with everyone I meet here, especially because we come from such diverse fields. I also like that Görlitz is very peaceful and has many beautiful historical buildings.
Where is your favorite spot in Görlitz?
Tim: Lake Berzdorf and the "Bierblume" in summer, the "King's Pub" in winter.
Bartosz: Although Görlitz is such a quiet and peaceful city, there are still some cool places to hang out after work. My favorite is the pub "Bierblume," which is located right near the CASUS building on the Untermarkt.
