New leadership at the Melanchthon Elementary School: A return to home

Since the start of the current school year, the Melanchthon Elementary School in Görlitz has been under the leadership of Björn Tscharntke. Around 270 children attend the school, which is delighted with its new headmaster.

Björn Tscharntke, 35, is originally from Ostritz and completed his Abitur (university entrance qualification) in Görlitz. He moved to Freiburg with his then-girlfriend and now-wife to study. Most recently, he spent seven years as the headmaster of a primary school in Schwörstadt, Baden-Württemberg, right on the border with Switzerland.

Despite their wonderful time in southern Baden, the Tscharntke family felt a growing desire to return to Upper Lusatia. Their time away had been lovely, "but it also showed us what we have here in the Görlitz district," explains Björn Tscharntke. The desire for family proximity played a particularly decisive role: The grandparents will all be living in the region again in the future, and support for the family's two children is just as valuable as the quick assistance they can offer to elderly relatives and friends.

A new center of life in Ostritz

Upon their return, "everything just fell into place." The family found a new home in Ostritz, where Björn Tscharntke's wife, a childhood educator, also manages a daycare center as a parental leave replacement.
