With the production site of BIRKENSTOCK, Görlitz has become an important hub for the European shoe industry. The rapid development has also been possible thanks to the good cooperation between the city’s administration and BIRKENSTOCK’s management.
The leap allowed BIRKENSTOCK to become one of the most important private employers of whole Upper Lusatia. Today, 75,000 pairs of cork-latex-footbed inlays and 30,000 pairs of sandals are manufactured. The quality products are shipped to more than 100 countries worldwide.
Yet, Görlitz is not the only production site for BIRKENSTOCK in the county. The nearby Bernstadt is home of the production of shafts as well as leather and synthetic upper parts for sandals and clogs. Also nearby, in Markersdorf, colourful buckles and rivets are made.
BIRKENSTOCK and Upper Lusatia – a real success story.
In 3,800 employees of the traditional family business, running in its sixth generation, almost every third is now working in this region. Hence, one of six employees of the whole branch is now working at one of BIRKENSTOCK‘s sites in Saxony.
At the moment, no end of growth is in sight. Thus, the search for more employees continues; employees not only from the practice professions, but also for highly qualified craft workers. BIRKENSTOCK is also training new people on their sites.
This project has received funding from tax resources on the basis of the budget adopted by the members of the Parliament of the Free State of Saxony.
