When Dominika Zalewska came to Görlitz with her family more than ten years ago, they were able to finally take a deep breath. “That was really the moment, when we felt, we arrived”, says her husband Jaroslaw Zalewski. The two medical doctors built a house in Görlitz and are fulfilled by their work for patients. Their three children benefit from it, as they grow up in Poland and Germany and naturally cross the borders. “We choose the best from two worlds”, the family says. When building the house, they profited from the reliability and quality of German construction companies. When it comes to food, their taste changes. With service providers, such as the trusted hair stylist, Dominika Zalewska prefers Poland.

More about Dominika Zalewska & Jaroslaw Zalewski European Town Görlitz-Zgorzelec

Welcome to the European town Görlitz-Zgorzelec

The European town Görlitz-Zgorzelec is a German-Polish twin town. In 1945, the river Neiße divided the parts. Today, it unites the town. Many people naturally enjoy life in Poland and Germany, life here, work there. Meet in restaurants on one side, go dancing on the other.

This is, where the European idea comes to life. Yet, this did not come by easily. Citizens from Görlitz and Zgorzelec, who were separated for 40 years until 1989, need time to get to know each other. It was seen as a grand symbol, when Görlitz and Zgorzelec declared to be a European town in 1998. With the EU expansion in 2004, the town was perceived more in the heart of the continent. Yet, this alone does not make it a real European town. This is only possible thanks to the many interactions and cooperation with people. Today, almost 4,000 Polish citizens live in Görlitz, more than 10 per cent of Görlitz’s population are international citizens. This cooperative daily life provides a good basis for a successful development of the European town Görlitz-Zgorzelec. Attractive to people who see Europe as their home, without having to leave behind language, home and tradition.
